live in washington. only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it.
tuesday. a lot of his back woeers would disagree but mitt romney is out there saying tomorrow's big debate isn't about winning. polls show romney in a close race with the president, but trailing badly in some of the swing states that will decide the presidential election. well, here is mitt romney, we have heard these words before, sounds as though he's downplaying expectations as they say. take a listen. >> people want to know who is going to win, who is going to score the punches and who is going to make the biggest difference in the arguments they make and there is going to be all the scoring of winning and losing. >> so romney is saying, no, it is not about winning, not about losing, it is about america. but you have a lot of republicans, newt gingrich, for example, saying, hey, mitt romney, get out there, pick a fight, and win it. jim acosta with me now from the romney campaign. the debate, of course, tomorrow night in denver, you, sir, are in littleton, colorado. should we take mitt romney at face value when he says this debate is not about me winning? >> reporter: well, brooke, i th
to be turned upside down come thursday morning. >> what are you doing, christie? for god sakes, if romney fails, he's going to lose the general election creating chaos in the republican party and that's going to leave open 2016 -- oh. the jersey is strong in this one. >> welcome to "morning joe," it's top of the hour and howard dean's already inciting problems here. it's tuesday, october 2nd. with us onset we have msnbc mike barnicle. howard dean, and former treasury official and "morning joe" economic analyst steve rattner, stranger. >> long time, no see. >> you're always here. >> you're never here. >> we're globe trotting, what can i say? hi, willie. >> what was your initial reaction to the elizabeth warren/scott brown debate. >> scott brown fell into the trap that sometimes male politicians fall into when they debate women. he looked overbearing and angry. and you particularly can't do that when you're debating a woman candidate. i thought he was in a lot of trouble as a result of this. he's behind anyway, but now he looks mad, angry, and i think that's a -- >> okay. well, that race is fasci
were saying you are not support of at this point of how much effort the president or mitt romney hachette -- mitt romney has put into this so far you are not a fan of either solution? >> it is more than just them. it is the team that works with them. they have not come up with something that works. >> i think neither candidate right now has a comprehensive plan that leads the six principles we're talking about. president obama does not really have a plan because his plan is his budget but his budget was rejected unanimously by the senate and house in the last two years so he has to start over again. mitt romney has a plant -- p lan he has not provided enough specifics and some of the specifics, the numbers did not at that. that is why it is critically important for both to be most pacific -- more specific, more solutions oriented in the debate so we can make an informed choice about who to support and they can claim they have a mandate. the people can then be involved to help get a fiscal burden next year. it is critically important. >> will you be watching the presidential debat
